Welcome to Fotheringhay Furnishings, a venture into bespoke furniture rejuvenation, restoration and up-cycling now surpassing its 8th year of trading. The project was born out of a passion for DIY, design and all things wooden! I am Darren Fountain, a former member of the Armed Forces and more recently a retired Police Officer who has decided that 50 was far too early to reach for the ‘ol’ pipe & slippers’! Having always been in my element tinkering around in my shed, I decided to follow an ambition to start my own business doing something I really enjoy. With that in mind I set up a workshop and showroom near my home. I trundle off each day with my black Labrador ‘Lady Boo’ to create works of individual character to sell as well as restoring items dear to families that they cannot bear to part with. Why should such pieces languish in garages and sheds when one could proudly display them and let them tell their story!

Building on my own abilities, in my first year I completed several woodworking courses, chalk painting design/technique workshops along with a traditional French Polishing course. Since then I have learnt more techniques and skills in restoration and as a result I am now engaged in my 8th year of trading. I have now never been busier refurbishing, rejuvenating, restoring and up-cycling unloved furniture. I have started to add small upholstery projects to my portfolio but for bigger projects I work closely with other local excellent upholstery services i have struck up associations with. I use the best materials available to me. Annie Sloan paints and waxes are my preferred paint mediums to create bespoke chalk paint finishes, but more recently I have found other leading brands of quality have become more prevalent to achieve a customers desired finish. These include Farrow & Ball and Little Green amongst others. It is important to follow current fashion trends and as such I am finding estate eggshell finish with a 20% sheen by Farrow & Ball  the most popular choice at present. Their vast contemporary palate range leaves one spoilt for choice and the flawless touch-up of the paint is an added bonus. There is no substitute for quality mediums and products. I am willing to undertake commission works upon consultation, but unfortunately insurance costs prohibits projects away from my workshop in homes. All sale items are not new thus carry their own stories/scars and as such are sold as seen.

Not being profit driven, I strive to give the best results I can to my work. Please see my contacts page to get in touch. To view any listed items or just to have a general look at my stock at my workshop, please get in touch as I operate by appointment only at evenings and weekends only.
